The UConn Huskies Arent As Dominant As Before But Theyre Still Dangerous

Last weekend, the UConn women’s basketball team punched its ticket to a 26th straight Sweet 16 with an 82-74 win over Buffalo. It was business as usual except for one small detail: the Huskies are a No. 2 seed, making this the first year since 2006 that the Huskies are not a No. 1 seed. The selection committee’s decision was controversial, but UConn Coach Geno Auriemma shrugged it off, saying, “We’re not going to practice differently because we’re a 2 instead of a 1.”Auriemma surely hopes his team doesn’t play any differently, either, as the Huskies have advanced to the Final Four in each of the past 11 seasons. In that span, they have won six national championships. But seeding aside, are this year’s Huskies any different? After all, this team only lost two games and none in the American Athletic Conference. Are UConn fans right to be upset about the No. 2 seed, or is the seed a real reflection of the fact that this year’s Huskies aren’t quite as elite as their title-winning predecessors?2018-19 UConn versus 2015-16 UConnUConn most recently won an NCAA title in 2015-16, led by the dominant trio of Breanna Stewart, Moriah Jefferson and Morgan Tuck. That team went 38-0 and won by almost 40 points per game, including a 31-point victory over Syracuse in the national championship game. According to Her Hoop Stats, UConn led the nation in most traditional and advanced statistics, including points per game, points allowed per game, field goal percentage, points per scoring attempt, assists per game and block rate.As an exercise, I selected 23 statistical categories from Her Hoop Stats on which to compare the 2015-16 and the 2018-19 teams. These included statistics on offense and defense—and on shooting, rebounding, assists, steals, blocks and fouls — in an attempt to represent the full range of each team’s abilities. Eight of the statistics happened to be categories in which UConn led the nation in 2015-16. This year’s UConn team leads the nation in just one of these statistics — foul rate — and bettered the 2015-16 team’s numbers in only three. This year’s team holds opponents to a lower shooting percentage on three-pointers, records assists on a higher percentage of its baskets, and has a slightly lower turnover rate than the 2015-16 team. This year’s Huskies lag behind the 2015-16 champ teamBased on 23 selected offense and defense statistics comparing the 2015-16 and 2018-19 University of Connecticut women’s basketball team 2018-19 UConn forward Napheesa Collier vs. 2015-16 forward Breanna Stewart in 17 statistics where Stewart leads Collier 2015-162018-19Is 2018-19 better? She ranks in the top 10 percent of players nationally in usage rate (27.0 percent), meaning that more than one in four Huskies possessions while she’s on the court ends with her shooting the ball or turning it over. (She registers an assist on another 21.5 percent of UConn possessions while she’s on the court.) Despite such a heavy workload, she is among the most efficient players in the nation, ranking 19th in field goal percentage (61.9%) and 22nd in points per scoring attempt (1.30).In March, anything can happen. Sometimes a player puts a team on his or her back and carries it to a championship. Basketball fans in Storrs know something about this: Kemba Walker did it for the UConn men in 2011 and Shabazz Napier followed suit three years later. In other years, the best team does win, as shown by UConn’s four undefeated seasons from 2008-09 to 2015-16. In other years, it’s a little of both — such as in 2002-03, a dominant season for the Huskies that Auriemma famously summarized as, “We have Diana [Taurasi] and you don’t.” This year, whether the title goes to an excellent team or to a transcendent individual talent, the UConn women have a good chance of taking home the trophy. The Huskies may not be quite as intimidating as they once were, but the 2-seed is still among the nation’s best. And, of course, they have Napheesa, and other teams don’t. Seniors Stewart, Jefferson and Tuck became the first three picks in the 2016 WNBA draft — the only time three players from the same school have ever been the top three picks in the WNBA or NBA draft.2018-19 UConn versus UConn title teams since 2009Her Hoop Stats only offers advanced statistics on teams from the 2015-16 season to the present, but UConn makes plenty of traditional stats available in its women’s basketball archives. It also trails the pack in several categories, most of which are on the defensive end. The 2018-19 Huskies generate the fewest steals and opponent turnovers of any UConn champion since 2009, allow the most points and the best shooting percentage, and give up the most rebounds. They are also shooting the worst percentage from the field, but they are still scoring more points per game than three of the previous six UConn champions. If you take the average in each statistical category, this year’s UConn team also ranks below average in all but two categories: turnovers per game and assist-to-turnover ratio. All together, these comparisons suggest there is some truth to the idea that this year’s UConn team isn’t as much of a juggernaut as it has been for most of the past 10 years.Where does that leave this year’s Huskies?Don’t panic, Huskies fans. None of this means the 2018-19 team cannot take home another championship. In fact, FiveThirtyEight’s March Madness predictions give UConn a 70 percent chance of making its 12th straight Final Four and a 16 percent chance of winning the championship. The latter is the third-best odds of any team left in the tournament. And UConn may have an ace up its sleeve in the form of senior Napheesa Collier. The 6-foot-1 forward was inexplicably left off the list of four finalists for the 2019 Naismith Player of the Year Award, but many of her numbers actually compare favorably to what three-time Naismith Player of the Year Breanna Stewart did in her senior year in 2015-16. Bahamas Government to Fully Integrate All Essential Services

first_imgFacebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsApp#Bahamas, November 30, 2017 – Nassau – The Government of The Bahamas is committed to utilizing technology as a catalyst for national development, including using technology to integrate all of the country’s essential services, Parliamentary Secretary in the Office of the Prime Minister, Mrs. Pakesia Parker-Edgecombe said Tuesday.Another end result will be the creation of a more robust and secure government portal that will allow for transacting business in a more interactive way, at both at the local and global level.   The strategy is part of an overarching plan to create a more technologically driven society within The Bahamas, placing technology at the heart of all public and private initiatives.Technology will also be used to facilitate the country’s participation in regional and global trade matters and to strengthen its cross-border collaboration on issues of mutual concern.“We believe that the effective governance and operation of our country depends on the extent to which we can use technology to integrate all essential services, create a more robust and secure government portal, and encourage Bahamians to embrace the new interactive method of doing business in the country,” Mrs. Parker-Edgecombe said.“We are well on our way to further strengthening institutions and building capacity through ICT.”Addressing the Opening Session of the URCA/Caribbean Telecommunications Union’s ‘ICT Week’ at Atlantis, Paradise Island, Mrs. Parker-Edgecombe said the creation of a more technologically driven society within The Bahamas is a major plank of the Minnis Administration.“We see it as a vital investment in expanding the economy and creating new, domestic, and foreign entrepreneurial opportunities; the possibility of domestic/foreign partnerships, and increased employment opportunities for Bahamians.”Parliamentary Secretary Parker-Edgecombe said the Government’s commitment to ICT is evident through the recent passage of the Commercial Enterprises legislation in the House of Assembly which, she said, embraces a broad range of investment opportunities that require secure, reliable ICT infrastructure to establish new, global business.“Our national ICT framework is a strength that we will continue to develop, improve and promote as a significant aspect of our ability to compete globally.”Mrs. Parker-Edgecombe said the B-Smart Bahamas initiative recently announced by Prime Minister, Dr. the Hon. Hubert A. Minnis, will also play a critical role in the Administration’s drive to “build a modern Bahamas” using technology.“This initiative (B-Smart Bahamas) is expected to embrace technology as an integral part of the Bahamian society, allowing greater public online communication access through the establishment of strategic public WIFI hotspots throughout the country.“This initiative also aims to embrace technology to establish a National Alert messaging process, particularly during times of natural disasters. (The system was piloted during the recent hurricane season).“As we continue to build the modern Bahamas, technology will be at the heart of all public and private initiatives.   We are also ensuring that technology facilitates our participation in regional and global trade and strengthens our cross-border collaboration on issues of mutual concern.”By: Matt Maura (BIS)Photo caption:  Parliamentary Secretary in the Office of the Prime Minister, with responsibility for Information and Communications, Pakesia Parker-Edgecombe addresses ‘ICT Week’ at Atlantis, Paradise Island, November 28, 2017.(BIS Photo/Patrick Hanna) Facebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsApp Related Items:last_img read more

10yrold India rape victim gives birth to baby girl

first_imgA 10-year-old rape victim whose plea for an abortion was rejected by India’s Supreme Court has given birth to a baby girl, a doctor said Thursday. The girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was raped several times allegedly by an uncle who has since been arrested.Last month her parents asked the country’s top court to allow her to have a late-term abortion but the request was turned down.Indian law does not allow medical terminations after 20 weeks unless there is a threat to either the life of the mother or her child.“She gave birth through C-section today (Thursday). Both the girl and her baby are doing fine,” doctor Dasari Harish told AFP by phone from the northern Indian city of Chandigarh.“The surgery was uneventful. There were no complications whatsoever. The baby weighed 2.2 kilos (4.8 pounds) and is in the neonatal ICU for now.”The Press Trust of India news agency said the girl was unaware that she had delivered a child and the parents had decided to put the baby up for adoption. Her parents have told her that she had a stone in her stomach and had undergone surgery to remove it, PTI said.India has a grim record of sexual assaults on minors with 20,000 cases of rape or sexual assaults reported in 2015, according to government data.last_img read more

Leadership change Ukraine braces for uncertain future

first_imgA member of a local electoral commission hangs an information placard bearing a portait of Ukrainian comedian and presidential candidate Volodymyr Zelensky as he prepares a polling station for the upcoming presidential election in Kiev, on 20 April 2019 on the eve of the second round of the Presidential election in Ukraine. Photo: AFPUkraine readied Saturday for a change in leadership as a young comedian appeared set to crush his incumbent rival in presidential polls, delivering a stinging rebuke to the old elite. The 41-year-old TV star Volodymyr Zelensky’s bid to lead Ukraine began as a long shot but all polls show him defeating president Petro Poroshenko in a second-round vote on Sunday. His victory would open a new chapter in the history of a country that has gone through two popular uprisings in two decades and is mired in a five-year conflict with Moscow-backed insurgents in the east.Despite mounting uncertainty Ukrainians are fed up with corruption, poverty, and the war that has claimed some 13,000 lives over the past five years.”There is a hope that a simple man will better understand us and dismantle the system that we have in our country,” Yuliya Lykhota, 29, told AFP in Kiev.”It is very important to raise our people’s spirits.”Others said they doubted the political novice’s ability to enact real change as Ukraine’s sixth president.”I do not believe he will last long once he’s elected,” said Sergiy Fedorets, 62.”He has no support in parliament. He’ll be eaten alive.”Collective anxietyPoroshenko came to power after a bloody 2014 uprising ousted a Kremlin-backed regime, triggering Moscow’s annexation of Crimea. But many in the country of 45 million people feel the promises of the uprising have not been fulfilled.Zelensky has capitalised on popular anger as well as his popularity as the star of the sitcom “Servant of the People”, in which he plays a school teacher who becomes a president.Analysts say his political programme is vague at best and it remains unclear who will fill key positions in his government.Ahead of the vote a popular news website, Ukrainska Pravda, published an interview with a therapist who pointed to severe anxiety in the country.”There is not a single person who would not be discussing the situation in the country,” said Oleg Chaban.”People are more tense because they are paying with their lives and expect real change quickly.”Poroshenko, 53, has fought hard to secure re-election but his pleas to forgive him for past mistakes and give him a second chance have fallen on deaf ears.A survey by the Rating pollster showed Zelensky winning 73 per cent of the vote against 27 per cent for Poroshenko.’Neither comedy nor horror film’ On Saturday, Poroshenko once again called on Ukrainians to think twice before casting ballots for his rival.”A five-year presidential term is not a comedy that you can easily switch off if it is no longer funny,” he wrote on Facebook.”Neither is it a horror movie that can be easily stopped.”The West has closely watched the race amid concern a new government might undo years of reforms it has backed.US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called both Zelensky and Poroshenko on Friday. He “reiterated our commitment to working with whomever the Ukrainian people choose to ensure the success of a secure, prosperous, democratic, & free (country),” Washington’s special envoy Kurt Volker said on Twitter. On Friday, the two rivals traded insults in the first and only debate of the campaign at Kiev’s 70,000-seater Olympic Stadium in front of thousands of spectators.Ukrainians said the head-to-head was more about political theatrics and a battle of wits than a much-needed policy debate.Zelensky accused Poroshenko — a tycoon who made a fortune in chocolate before taking office — of enriching himself and failing to end the war in the east. The Ukrainian leader attacked the inexperience of the untested Zelensky, questioning his ability to be a wartime commander-in-chief and saying he would not be able to stand up to Russia’s Vladimir Putin. He also drew attention to Zelensky’s ties to controversial tycoon Igor Kolomoysky.Supporters credit Poroshenko with rebuilding the army and securing an Orthodox Church independent of Russia but he won only just over half of Zelensky’s vote share in the first round of the election last month.last_img read more

Settlement Near In Prison Heat Lawsuit

first_img Listen 00:00 /08:52 Michael HagertyThe Wallace Pack Unit, located about 70 northwest of Houston, near Navasota. To embed this piece of audio in your site, please use this code:center_img Share X A class action lawsuit over heat in a Texas prison is likely to be settled after a federal court hearing Tuesday.Houston Chronicle reporter Gabrielle Banks tells Houston Matters the terms of the settlement would require temporary air conditioning units installed at the Wallace Pack Unit near Navasota be replaced by permanent units by May 2020, pending legislative approval. The settlement also resolves several wrongful death and wrongful injury lawsuits and awards $4.5 million to an Austin law firm for trying the case. The Chronicle also learned that Bryan Collier, the executive director of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, has proposed creating 26 new definitions of at-risk inmates who are especially susceptible to extreme heat — such as those age 65 or older, or those with diabetes or heart conditions. The original class action lawsuit, filed in 2014, claimed hot conditions at the low-security, 1,400-bed prison of mostly geriatric inmates violated constitutional protections against cruel and unusual punishment.Tuesday’s proceeding is merely a fairness hearing, where any of the parties in the class action who had a complaint could make a statement in court. Since those parties are prison inmates, Banks says it could make for a chaotic day in court as they make statements via phone.Banks learned some other measures the prison system is taking that aren’t part of the settlement, including plans to relocate at-risk prisoners at 75 uncooled units to 29 prisons already equipped with air conditioning. Such a move could possibly be an effort to stave off future lawsuits from other prisoners, she said. The Texas prison system intends to make use of the 32,000 beds it already has in air conditioned cell blocks but might need additional fencing and other equipment to secure violent offenders. Completing such transfers could take years but would be cheaper than installing air conditioning to old prisons.Banks researched how many other states provide air conditioning for their inmates and how that compares to Texas. She found only five states that provide air conditioning to all state prisoners, while 21 others offer it to at least half their prisoners. Texas is among six states in the South that do not provide cooling for the majority of their state inmates.Banks says officials acknowledge 22 prisoners died from extreme indoor heat over 14 years in prisons from South Texas to Dallas. However, some human rights and health experts who visited Texas prisons estimated the actual number is much higher.last_img read more

My Mangolicious lunch

first_imgTired of summers and the scorching heat in the month of June, all I wanted was to go back home from work and eat the chilled mangoes which I kept in the fridge before leaving for office. This was my daily routine, all the summers and then one day I was invited by Cafe Knosh in Leela Ambience Convention Hotel, Delhi, to taste their exclusive ‘Mangolicious’ menu. It is then when I realised that there is a lot more scope with mango as an ingredient than just having Its slices. Also Read – Add new books to your shelfBefore going to the venue, I was totally unaware of what will be served to me. But trust me, my eyes were wide opened and mouth started watering when I saw the meticulous range of dishes – from appetizers to the main course – covering different kinds of rice and roti preparations to desserts. The welcome drinks varied from a very basic ‘Mangotini’, which was more like a pulpy fruity with slices of mango in it to a very unique amalgamation of coconut and mango in ‘Mango coconut chia cooler’. The mocktail menu was an assemblage of three more drinks besides Mangotini and Chia cooler. Also Read – Over 2 hours screen time daily will make your kids impulsiveNow that the body temperature was normalised and we started to talk, a starter was served in front of us – which was Raw mango stuffed aranchi with sweet mango aioli. Maybe, the name is too big and confusing, but the way it was presented was immensely appealing to my eyes.Enlisted in the menu were the other four starter items out of which I liked ‘Ambi pudina ki machhli’ and ‘Aam ke kaliyan waale jhinge’. Personally, I didn’t like the ‘fried chicken’ and ‘Mango chilli potato’ there, as the taste was very basic and boring. The main-course menu out-stood the charts as the chef had very wisely chosen the dishes and balance of taste and presentation were quite visible. You won’t believe me if I tell you that I had ‘Mango Noodles’ as my lunch. Will you? Well, they were amongst the best noodles I have ever had in my life.I am not a big fan of eating fish, but the chef at Cafe Knosh made me fall in love with his second recipe of ‘fish’ when I had the first bite of ‘mango fish curry’ with rice. The fish was so soft and the curry had a perfect balance of spices in it. I would give that curry a perfect 10/10. Also, the Pancha Manga curry, a South Indian mango curry served with nice was okay in taste but the mongo fish curry stole the show.I literally held my tummy and said “I cannot eat anything else. ENOUGH!” when a very subtle and alluring platter of deserts was kept on my table and the chef asked me to try it.I swear that even if the chef had not asked me to eat it, I had already made my mind to dive into the beauty and experience its taste. Now, that I had the mango mousse and cupcake in Cafe Knosh, I would not be able to try any other mango dessert without comparing it with the one I just had!It was so delicious and pleasing to my eyes that in no time I ate the whole palate and wanted to ask for more.Overall, I had a wonderful experience and I would definitely love to experiment with the king of fruits, now that I know that it blends with so many things to make a perfect dish. This festival offering plenty of happiness with mangoes will last until June 25.last_img read more
