Exclusive – Defoe will save Sunderland from relegation, claims former Tottenham team-mate

first_imgJermain Defoe will ensure Sunderland beat Premier League relegation this season, according to former Tottenham teammate and ex-Black Cats loan star Danny Rose. The FC Toronto striker is on the verge of joining Gus Poyet’s side, with Jozy Altidore moving in the other direction. The MLS operates an allocation system, meaning other clubs have been offered the USA star first, depending on how they fared in the previous season. The Canadian outift is the only franchise interested in the 25-year-old, talkSPORT understands, so Defoe’s switch to the Stadium of Light will be confirmed once the delay has been rectified and the England international could be in Poyet’s squad to face Tottenham on Saturday. And, speaking following the north London club’s 4-2 FA Cup third round replay victory over Burnley, Rose claims the former West Ham forward will help Sunderland, who are currently just one point off the relegation zone, beat the drop.“I was shocked when he went to America,” Rose told talkSPORT. “If you know Jermain he’s as fit as he’s ever been. He keeps himself in incredible shape.“He loves scoring goals and he’ll help Sunderland pick up their form. He’ll keep them in the Premier League this season.”Former Sunderland star Michael Gray has also backed Defoe to spark the Black Cats’ season into life.Speaking on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, he said: “It is one of those signings that really excites the fans. That hasn’t happened since possibly the Adam Johnson signing, somebody with a name who certainly knows the Premier League.“Everybody seems to looking for goalscorers. They are looking at the Championship or in Europe but with Jermain, he knows the Premier League. He is a goalscorer and that is exactly what Sunderland need at the minute.“I have seen some of their performances lately and they just need a spark, and I hope it is going to be Jermain that brings that.”last_img read more
